exercise in which the same sample is characterized by several laboratories. In the first case, the reference value is not necessarily known, and the aim is to evaluate a method, validate a protocol or give a value to a reference material. In the second case, the value to be obtained is known to the exercise leader, and the participating laboratories can assess their skills and mastery of the protocol.
