These are two different types of exercise in which the same sample is characterized by several laboratories. In the first case, the reference value is not necessarily known, and the aim is to evaluate a method, validate a protocol or give a value to a reference material. In the second case, the value to be obtained is known to the exercise leader, and the participating laboratories can assess their skills and mastery of the protocol. This latter type of exercise is the basis for COFRAC accreditation of testing laboratories.
