Nanomaterials and issues

Data issues

Nanomaterials are a tremendous source of innovation, and can be found in all industrial sectors. They can provide answers to the many challenges facing our societies, from the susbtitution of critical resources to the development of innovative products, new therapies and energy and transport issues.

However, their full development and access to the market for a variety of applications are hampered by test data that are often of insufficient quality and comparability.

This has a direct impact on :

  • the transition from laboratory to industrial-scale processes for producing or integrating these nanomaterials, and the high costs that may be associated with it
  • the traceability of nanomaterial use across value chainsTheir imperfect nature hinders a better assessment of their impact on the exposure of populations and the environment.
  • a more complex implementation of existing regulatory requirements whether French, European or international; sectoral or cross-functional.
  • the highlighting relevant links between physico-chemical characteristics and toxicological or ecotoxicological profiles
  • the perception and acceptability by civil society of these advanced materials.

The production of data using validated, recognized and accepted analytical approaches is therefore central to the establishment of better governance of nanomaterials and the innovations associated with them, even though the necessary methods are not always available or shared between the various stakeholders concerned. The fragmentation of the community is a further difficulty in this complex field.
