European MACRAMÉ project

The European project MACRAMÉ-Project organized the first Risk Assessor Summit on November 27 and 28, with the aim of establishing the concept of an environmental and safety assessment of Advanced Materials (AdMas) throughout a product's life cycle.

Contributions from the authorities (European Chemicals AgencyJRC), expert laboratories (EmpaBundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin (BAuA)Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) and industry have helped identify the needs, challenges and approaches to be considered by regulatory risk assessors, particularly in relation to the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework pushed by the European Commission.

Our member Sarp Industries was invited to share the point of view of a hazardous waste treatment industrialist in terms of the needs in the field for practical implementation of this SSbD concept.

Chaucherie, Director of Innovation and Process, emphasized:

➡ the lack of information and traceability concerning AdMas in hazardous waste, highlighting the need to develop in-house methods and complex analytical tools to track nanoparticles

➡ the need for harmonized methods for physicochemical characterization and quantification of AdMas

➡ industry's lack of interest in AdMas, due to the absence of emission factors

➡ the importance of sampling, which has long been a problem in defining emission factors
