Assessing exposure to nano-objects, their agglomerates and aggregates (NOAA) in the workplace can be achieved with low-cost, portable sensors. They can be used to monitor processes in factories producing substances in particulate form, by measuring the concentration of aerosols in the air.
This European prenormative project, which began in January 2020 and will run for five years, aims to develop a Technical Specification (CEN/TS) concerning the use of low-cost sensors for assessing workplace exposure to NOAA. An inventory of the various devices available on the market was drawn up, and the metrological performance of each was assessed in the laboratory against reference instruments (SMPS). Exposure chambers are used to control temperature, hygrometry and exposure aerosols (chemical nature, concentration, size range, etc.). Recommendations for the conditions and ranges of use of these low-cost systems can thus be proposed.
